Sweat and Your Prosthesis

Increased sweating is inevitable during the warmer months - here are some tips to help you stay dry and comfortable this summer.

As the warm Manitoba summer approaches, many people living with a prosthetic leg notice a common challenge: sweating inside their prosthesis. In fact, it is one of the most common concerns we hear about from our clients!

Understanding Sweating and How it Impacts Your Prosthesis

Sweating inside your prosthetic limb is a natural response to heat and physical activity. The residual limb sweats because the liner and socket create a warm and enclosed environment. Unfortunately, this moisture can cause skin irritation, infections or impact the fit of your prosthesis by making it slippery.

Managing sweat is key to preventing these issues and ensuring your prosthesis stays comfortable all day without impacting your ROM (range of motion). At WinPO, we understand how important it is to stay comfortable and active during these warmer months. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your summer.

  1. Ensure your Liner Fits Properly

To reduce sweating, consider using an airtight liner, as it limits airflow. Avoid stretched liners or volume-reducing socks, since they can create extra air pockets that increase perspiration.

  1. Try an Antiperspirant

Did you know that antiperspirants can help control sweat on your residual limb? You can experiment with over-the-counter options or consult your prosthetist or doctor about clinical-strength formulas. Applying antiperspirant carefully can reduce moisture buildup inside your prosthesis.

  1. Watch for Skin Changes on and around Your Residual Limb

It’s important to inspect your residual limb daily for any signs of irritation such as redness, blisters, or sores caused by friction or moisture. If you notice any changes, take extra care and consider using protective dressings recommended by your healthcare provider.

  1. Take Breaks

Even with all precautions, managing sweat can be tricky. Give your residual limb time to breathe throughout the day by removing your prosthesis when safe and practical. Change your socks regularly to keep the liner fresh and dry, helping prevent discomfort and skin issues.

  1. Wash & Dry Your Liner and Prosthesis Thoroughly

Hygiene is crucial. Clean your liner, socks, and prosthesis daily using warm water and mild soap. Make sure to wash both the inside and outside of your devices, then dry them completely before wearing. This prevents bacterial buildup and keeps your prosthesis smelling fresh.
